Position Description

Valiant Solutions is seeking a Security Engineer to join a busy Security Engineering team responsible for designing and integrating solutions to support our innovative Government client. The successful candidate will have broad security experience implementing solutions that meet government risk and compliance requirements detailed in NIST special publications. As the Senior Security Engineer you will gather client requirements and evaluable solution options with respect to the application of secure configuration baselines.  Additionally this role will support software approvals, which can involve reviewing COTS solutions against existing systems or custom development options.


The successful candidate will have experience implementing security controls to secure systems. This will include experience security system components such as the network layer, operating systems, web applications, hyper-visors, applications and other enterprise technologies. The candidate will have experience implementing operating system hardening baselines and will have knowledge of validating them with automated tools. This position will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to engineer a variety of solutions and gain experience with a wide range of technologies deployed in cloud and on- premise environments.

This position allows for a 60% - 80% telecommute if located in the Washington DC, Fort Worth TX, Denver CO or Kansas City MO areas.  100% remote is acceptable for candidates that live outside of the above listed regions. Remote work necessitates a high-level trust in our employees. Job Description: 

  • Customizes Bigfix content (e.g., fixlets and logical statements)
  • Assists in development/customization of Tenable audit files and Ansible automation content
  • Perform security analysis to determine gap, compensating/mitigating controls, and residual risk
  • Identify security risks through the security impact analysis, system risk assessments and technology security risk reports
  • Implement IT security solutions and assures successful implementation
  • Apply knowledge of security principles, policy, and regulations to development of configuration baseline documentation and software analysis activities
  • Conduct security compliance evaluations on IT products using all source analysis, test lab, and apply test results to create secure configuration guidelines and baselines
  • Analyze security evaluation tools results from Tenable Nessus, Nmap, BigFix, SCCM, or other mechanisms 
  • Performs software testing for: software, code and extension analysis; assessing enterprise risk and acceptability for use within the enterprise
  • Provide guidance to Client Engineering and Server Services teams for operating system and security configuration guideline application to gold images for IT products initialization and deployment within the infrastructure
  • Organize, develop, and present security briefings, written summaries, and written reports incorporating narrative, tabular and/or graphic elements on security assessments, whitepapers relating to computer and network security technologies and tools
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate and collaborate with external and internal customers of any hardware and software configuration changes that adversely affect any current system security and their configurations or violates policy
  • Design, develop, and implement hardening controls with Ansible, Jenkins and AWS Lambda
  • Design, develop, and maintain documentation in accordance with customer practices and policies
  • Other tasks and activities as assigned


Required Experience / Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant experience; 2 additional years of experience may be substituted for a degree
  • Experience with customization of CIS (Center for Intermet Security) Benchmarks / DISA STIGS in accordance with enterprise policies and practices
  • Experience evaluating hardening recommendations, assessing their actions and assisting in the development of the application of those recommendations
  • Experience with automated systems management Examples: GPO, BigFix, Nessus, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM)
  • Python, Shell/Bash, or PowerShell scripting experience
  • Design and development automation of hardening controls e.g. for infrastructure as code; with respect to hardening baselines using Ansible, Jenkins or like automation technologies
  • Experience with one or more virtualization and cloud technologies like Red Hat OpenStack Platform, Red Hat Virtualization, VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or Microsoft Azure
  • Experience working with APIs
    • For programmatic information gathering
    • For process / task automation
    • Review of activities and purposes of APIs and determining systems integrations
  • 5+ Years total of IT experience in security engineering: 
    • The successful candidate must have experience designing hardening requirements and controls, implementing security solutions for all system layers.
  • 4+ years experience with security tools. 
    • The successful candidate will have experience with security tools used to secure information systems and networks. This may include vulnerability management tools, HIPS solutions, or SIEM tools. 
    • Experience with implementation of hardening benchmarks. The successful candidate will have experience implementing and reporting compliance benchmarks such as DISA STIG and or Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks.
    • Experience supporting a government client’s compliance with FISMA and NIST requirements, The successful candidate will have experience working with NIST special publications and FISMA requirements which provide guidance on security requirements for government systems.
  • 4+ years experience with systems administration: 
    • The successful candidate must have experience with Windows and Linux/UNIX server operating systems. 
    • You will understand permissions in both OS types and be familiar with authentication mechanisms
    • You must have experience installing and configuring both operating systems.

  • Experience researching, documenting, and reporting emerging threats and vulnerabilities by analyzing software, DevOps processes, and current operating practices to engineer improved risk management outcomes
