Position Description

Valiant Solutions is seeking a Cloud / Splunk Engineer to join our rapidly growing and innovative cybersecurity team in Lanham, MD.

 

The Cloud / Splunk Engineer will play a critical role within the Cyber Threat Fusion Center (CTFC) to enhance the security posture by working with appropriate organizations to ensure seamless onboarding of appropriate cloud logs from new cloud instances. The engineer will ensure that Splunk logs are correctly formatted and aligned with security and compliance standards and meet the team’s needs. Additionally, the Cloud / Splunk Engineer will provide the team with access to critical system security information, enabling a thorough understanding of cloud applications, network infrastructure, and their security implications.

Required Qualifications:

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.

 

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in cloud engineering or cloud security.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Proficiency in integrating and managing logs in Splunk.

 

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of cloud security best practices and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with log management and parsing tools (e.g., Fluentd, Logstash).
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automation.
  • Ability to create detailed technical documentation and diagrams.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure and cloud-native architectures.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to staying current with evolving cloud technologies and cybersecurity trends.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications include AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Azure Administrator, and Google Cloud Professional Cloud Engineer.
  • Knowledge of federal security frameworks, such as M-21-31, NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), and FedRAMP.
  • Experience working in a Security Operations Center (SOC) or incident response environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Cloud Log Management

  • Collaborate with cloud administrators and service owners to onboard logs from new cloud instances (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
  • Ensure logs are correctly formatted and integrated into the organization’s SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) or log management platform.
  • Verify that cloud logs meet organizational compliance requirements, including M-21-31 and other federal cybersecurity mandates.
  • Troubleshoot issues with log ingestion, formatting, and accessibility.
  • Identify logs necessary to create detection content.

 

Splunk

  • Splunk log ingestion and formatting

 

System Security Integration

  • Facilitate the team’s access to critical system security information, ensuring transparency and comprehension of the cloud ecosystem.
  • Develop and maintain documentation detailing cloud applications' security architecture, configuration, and operational workflows.
  • Assist in mapping cloud application workflows and their dependencies on network infrastructure for improved incident response and threat analysis.

 

Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing

  • Work closely with cybersecurity analysts, engineers, and incident responders to identify and address gaps in cloud log availability or security posture.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and IT teams to align cloud security practices with operational workflows.
  • Provide technical insights and recommendations to support cloud security policies and procedures.

 

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure that cloud security and logging processes align with federal cybersecurity regulations, including NIST SP 800-53, CISA guidelines, and FISMA requirements.
  • Generate reports on log onboarding status and coverage and identified gaps for leadership review.

The salary range for this position is a general guideline and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. It has been benchmarked in relation to the scope of the role, market rate, and internal equity. The salary for this role is expected to be in the $135,000 - $149,000 range. Where a candidate falls within the band can be determined based on one or more of the following: skillset, experience level, achievements, education, geographic location, security clearance, involvement in corporate tasks, and other non-discriminatory factors. In addition to the base salary, this role will include benefits as described above.  Valiant reserves the right to adjust the salary range, experience requirements, and position responsibilities at any time without prior notice.
